How does laser hair removal work?
The laser is light energy that travels through the skin to the hair follicle. The laser is attracted to the dark color in the hair and when it interacts with the pigment, a heat effect is created. The heat causes damage to the follicle and in 7- 14 days the treated hair will be shed. The treated area will feel soft, smooth and hair free! In four to eight weeks it will be time to return to the office for your next treatment. At that time you will see a significant decrease in the texture, density and amount of hair that has regrown.
How well the laser works depends on the hair in the treatment area. The laser works very well for brown and black hair but does not impact white or blond hair. There are three cycles of hair growth all over the body. Using basic terms, they are active, inactive and shedding cycles. The laser is most effective in the active or growth phase and this is part of the reason that multiple treatments are necessary to achieve permanent hair reduction. Since the laser works on the root of the hair, the client must discontinue waxing, tweezing and electrolysis for three weeks prior to their treatment.
What can I expect at my consultation?
Every client is scheduled for a complimentary consultation. At that time a comprehensive health history form is completed and reviewed for any contraindications. You will learn about the three cycles of hair growth, active, inactive and shedding and about how the laser works. We will customize a treatment plan for you along with all of your pricing options. You will be given pre and post treatment instructions so you will be informed about how to care for the treatment area before and after your first treatment. We offer 3 and 6 package discounts as well as interest free patient financing.
What types of payment do you accept?
We accept cash, checks, MasterCard, Visa, Discover and Care Credit. Care Credit is a payment solution that offers 0% financing for up to 12 months for those who qualify. This credit card is a revolving line of credit that also has longer repayment plans with interest. You can apply at home or in our office and it just takes a few minutes to get approved.
What can I expect my first treatment to be like?
At your first visit, the nurse or doctor will put an ice pack on the treatment site to pre-cool the area and minimize your discomfort. She will apply a cool gel and begin treatment. The laser comes out in timed bursts of energy and easily slides across the skin. You will feel a heat sensation as well as something like an elastic band snapping on your skin. Smaller areas like the face and underarms take about 15 minutes to complete, while larger areas like forearms, legs and back can take up to an hour and a half. Once the treatment is completed we may apply ice packs for a few minutes and then apply a cream and a sunscreen. The area may feel slightly warm for an hour or so. The area may be pink for one to twenty four hours. You can apply makeup as usual right after your treatment. Before you leave, we will review your post treatment instructions with you and schedule your next visit in 4 to 8 weeks depending on the area you had treated.
What does it feel like?
While you are having the treatment done it will feel like a rubber band snapping on your skin along with a heat sensation. For most areas we will pre-treat with ice packs to minimize your discomfort. Most people find the treatment is very tolerable. For those patients who are more sensitive to the sensation of the laser, we recommend that a topical numbing cream be applied to the area one hour prior to the treatment.
Once the treatment is completed the area may be slightly warm and pink for about an hour.
How many treatments will I need?
Experience tells us that the number of treatments required is 6 to 8 for most people. There are many variables. It depends on the area, color and density of the hair being treated. Hormones, illnesses and medications can greatly affect the efficacy of the laser treatments. Some people may require a few additional treatments. People with hormonal disorders commonly require additional maintenance treatments.
What parts of the body can I treat?
Men and women can treat the body from head to toe. Men can remove unwanted hair from anywhere on their body. Typically men remove chest and back hair but they also take pleasure in treating their neck and hair line. Lasering the neck line creates a nice clean appearance and it is an area where most men find irritating to shave. Problem hair in the ears is an area of concern for many men and it can easily be treated. Women commonly treat their faces, underarms, bikinis and their legs.
Women:
Lip - chin- neck - cheeks - underarms - forearms - hands - fingers- breasts- abdomen - bikini- buttocks-thighs -lower legs- feet-toes
Men: Beards- neckline-hairline-ears- chest - arms - hands-fingers - underarms -back - shoulders - buttocks- bikini- legs - feet- toes
How long will the treatments take?
Laser hair removal is quick and easy! Smaller areas can be treated in just 15 to 30 minutes. Larger areas such as the back or the legs can take 11/2 hours to 2 hours. With our convenient hours you can stop by on your lunch break or come in the evening, after work or even on a Saturday.
How frequently will I need to have treatments done?
Once the treatment is complete, it takes the body 1 to 3 weeks to shed the treated hair. New hair will start to appear at different rates on different parts of the body. Facial areas are usually treated every 4 to 6 weeks and body areas are usually treated every 6 to 10 weeks. The more treatments you have the longer it takes for the hair to grow back.
Most people require an average of 6 visits to reach their desired goal.
Are there any special post treatment instructions?
After your treatment the skin will look pink and feel slightly warm. This usually subsides within an hour but may take up to 24 hours. You will be instructed to wear a sunscreen daily with an SPF of 25 or greater. If you are treating larger areas we ask that you wait a day before doing any strenuous exercise and to refrain from using any hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms or jacuzzis for 5 days. You can apply makeup as usual but be sure to gently remove it at night.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
The equipment that we use, the Cutera Cool Glide Excel laser, is approved by the F.D.A. for permanent hair reduction. This means that with the treatment a permanent change takes place. The hair that regrows after the treatment will be finer, less dense and there will be less of it. Multiple treatments are necessary but a permanent result will be achieved.
The exception would be for individuals who have hormonal imbalances, certain illnesses or medications that affect hair growth.
